The Change-Over Maintenance Checklist

It is important that all maintenance and repair work is completed and checked before re-stocking begins. Breakdowns and emergency repairs are stressful for the birds and stockperson, can severely disrupt production, and are usually more expensive than planned maintenance.

Feeders

  • Check corner wheels, wear plates and drive cogs for wear and damage.
  • Grease the drive chain and ensure it runs smoothly.
  • Inspect the feed hopper for wear or damage, making sure that it is straight and level.
  • Check the bulk feed bin is clean, free from leaks and dampness from the clean out; accumulated stale/wet feed can cause contamination and blockages that can lead to breakdowns.
  • Check the auger for worn out bends and tubes.

Starting Feeders for the First Time

  • Put a bucket load of feed into each corner of the track.
  • Put a couple of bucket loads into the feed hopper.
  • Run the track with auger switched off – the feed lubricates the track.
  • Once the feed has returned, then the auger can be started and the feed filled automatically.

Nest Boxes

  • Ensure that the closing mechanisms on nest boxes are working properly by closing the nests, then walking around inspecting each nest individually.
  • Check and replace damaged floor mats
  • Inspect the egg belt and replace if necessary. Patching should only be short term / mid crop measure.
  • Clean and lubricate the drive end rollers in return stations. Neglecting this hard to reach area can result in the belt riding off the roller, leading to egg loss.

Farm Packer

It is worth employing a qualified engineer to service your farm packer. Complex, precision equipment requires professional maintenance, which can prevent costly egg breakages.

Drinker Line

After cleaning header tank and drinker line, and flushing through the sanitizer, this is something that can be done on a regular basis throughout the crop:

  • Replace leaking nipples.
  • On a cup system, check and replace any broken cups.
  • Check the suspension cables for signs of wear or damage
